A Simple Guide to Get Your Garden Ready for Autumn
As summer begins to fade, a few simple jobs can make all the difference to your garden. Autumn doesn’t have to mean packing everything away — it’s the perfect time to tidy, refresh and add a little seasonal colour so your outdoor space still feels lovely to step into.
From clearing leaves and caring for pots to choosing plants that will carry your garden through the cooler months, here are a few simple ways to get your garden autumn-ready.
1. Start With a Simple Garden Tidy
You don’t need to completely clear the garden as soon as summer ends. Start with the things that make the biggest difference — sweep paths and patios, remove anything that’s past its best and gather fallen leaves. A quick tidy can instantly make the whole garden feel cared for again.
Leave a little of the natural growth where you can too. Seed heads and some spent plants can look beautiful through autumn while providing food and shelter for wildlife.
2. Give Your Pots an Autumn Refresh
Summer pots can start looking a little tired by the end of the season, but you don’t need to replace everything. Remove plants that have finished, tidy anything that’s still going strong and fill the gaps with a few autumn favourites.
Heather, cyclamen, heuchera and ornamental grasses are lovely for adding colour and texture, while terracotta and warm neutral pots help create that cosy autumn feel.
Gather & Bloom tip: Group pots in different heights rather than spreading them around — even three pots together can make a small corner feel much more styled.
3. Add Autumn Colour That Lasts
As summer flowers begin to fade, introduce a few plants that will keep your garden looking lovely through autumn. You don’t need lots — just a few well-placed plants can completely refresh a border, patio or doorstep.
Look for heuchera, cyclamen, heather, asters and ornamental grasses for beautiful autumn colour and texture. Evergreen plants are useful too, giving you structure and greenery as everything else starts to die back.
Gather & Bloom tip: Choose two or three colours and repeat them around the garden. Soft greens, burgundy, dusky pink and warm terracotta work beautifully together and keep everything feeling calm and considered.
4. Make Your Outdoor Space Cosy for Cooler Days
Autumn doesn’t mean you have to stop using the garden. A few cosy touches can make a patio or seating area somewhere you’ll still want to sit with a coffee when the temperature starts to drop.
Bring out a warm throw, add a couple of outdoor cushions and use lanterns or warm outdoor lighting to make the space feel inviting as the evenings get darker. Even a small bench or chair tucked into a sheltered corner can become a lovely autumn spot.
Gather & Bloom tip: You don’t need to buy a whole new set of accessories. Try bringing out colours you already have indoors — olive green, warm beige, rust and natural wood all look beautiful outside in autumn.
5. Get Ready for Falling Leaves
Falling leaves are part of autumn, but keeping on top of them little and often makes the job much easier. Clear leaves from paths, patios and lawns regularly, especially when they're wet and slippery.
Instead of throwing them away, gather healthy fallen leaves into a pile or leaf bag and let them break down into leaf mould. Over time, it creates a lovely natural soil improver for your garden — and it costs nothing.
Check gutters, drains and around pots too, as leaves have a habit of collecting in all those little places.
Gather & Bloom tip: Keep a garden tub or basket somewhere easy to reach. A quick five-minute tidy while you're already outside feels much easier than tackling everything at once.
6. Think Ahead to Spring
Autumn is also the perfect time to do a little planning for next year. Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, crocuses and alliums now and you’ll be rewarded with colour when the garden begins waking up again.
Tuck bulbs into borders or layer them into pots so there’s something lovely waiting beneath the soil through winter.
Gather & Bloom tip: If you’re planting pots, mix different varieties that flower at slightly different times. It’s an easy way to keep colour appearing for longer without needing lots of separate containers.
