7 Simple Ways to Make Your Home Look More Expensive
There’s something about a home that feels beautifully put together that makes you want to stay a little longer. But the good news is, creating that feeling doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune.
I’ve always believed it’s the smaller details that make the biggest difference — the lighting, the textures, the way a room is styled and even the things you choose to leave out.
So if you’d love your home to feel a little more polished and expensive without completely redecorating, here are seven simple changes that can make a surprisingly big difference.
1. Get the Lighting Right
Lighting can completely change how a room feels. Rather than relying on one bright ceiling light, try adding smaller pools of light around the room with table lamps and floor lamps.
I love warm lighting in the evening — it instantly makes a space feel cosier, softer and much more considered. Even an inexpensive lamp can look beautiful with the right shade and a warm-toned bulb.
Think of lighting as part of the decoration rather than simply something you need to see by.
2. Mix Your Textures
One of the easiest ways to make a room feel more luxurious is to layer different textures. A home can have a beautiful colour scheme, but if everything has the same finish it can still feel a little flat.
Try mixing soft cushions, a chunky throw, natural wood, linen, ceramics and woven baskets. You don’t need lots — just a few different textures dotted around the room can make it feel warmer and much more interesting.
I especially love using natural materials because they tend to work together effortlessly and don’t go out of style quickly.
3. Choose Fewer, Bigger Accessories
It’s tempting to fill every surface with lots of little decorative pieces, but sometimes having less actually makes a room look more expensive.
Try choosing a few larger pieces instead — a beautiful vase with branches, an oversized lamp, a large piece of artwork or a statement bowl on a coffee table. Giving these pieces a little space around them allows them to stand out.
I often find that simply taking a few things away and rearranging what I already own can completely change a room — and it doesn’t cost anything.
4. Style in Small Groups
Sometimes it’s not what you have in a room, but how you put it together that makes the difference.
Instead of spreading accessories across a shelf, coffee table or sideboard, try bringing a few pieces together. I like using a mixture of heights — perhaps a vase with some greenery, a candle and a small stack of books. It instantly makes everything feel a little more considered.
You don’t need to fill every space either. Leaving some room around the things you’ve chosen can make even inexpensive pieces look much more stylish.
5. Bring Nature Indoors
Plants, flowers and simple greenery can completely change how a room feels. They add colour, texture and life without making the space feel busy.
You don’t need to turn your home into a jungle either. A few leafy branches in a vase, a small plant on a shelf or some seasonal flowers on the table can be enough.
I love using greenery because it works with almost any style and it’s an easy way to refresh a room as the seasons change. Even something picked from the garden and popped into a favourite vase can make a lovely little difference.
6. Give Everyday Items a Beautiful Home
Not everything we use every day needs to be hidden away. Sometimes it’s simply about finding a nicer way to keep the things we need close by.
A woven basket can hold blankets, a pretty tray can gather together everyday bits on a coffee table, and a ceramic pot can keep kitchen utensils looking tidy. Even something as simple as putting remote controls into a small decorative box can make a room feel calmer.
I love this because it’s practical as well as pretty. Your home still works for everyday life — things just have somewhere to go, which makes keeping it tidy feel much easier.
7. Make Your Home Feel Like You
The finishing touch isn’t something you can buy — it’s adding the little things that make your home feel personal to you.
Family photographs, books you actually enjoy, something you brought home from a holiday, a favourite candle or an old piece that has a story behind it can make a room feel much more special.
I think the nicest homes are the ones that don’t look as though they’ve been copied straight from a catalogue. They feel lived in, comfortable and personal.
Trends can give us inspiration, but your home doesn’t need to be perfect. Choose the things you love, move things around until they feel right and create a space that you genuinely enjoy coming back to.
A Home You Love Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
Creating a home you love isn’t about constantly buying new things or following every trend. Sometimes the smallest changes — moving something, clearing a surface or bringing in something from another room — make the biggest difference.
Take your time, use what you already have and trust what feels right to you. After all, your home should work for the way you actually live.
Until next time,
