Autumn Must-Have Plants

As summer begins to fade, autumn brings a beautiful new palette to the garden. Rich foliage, soft grasses and seasonal flowers can keep pots, borders and doorsteps looking lovely well into the cooler months.

Here are some of my favourite plants for creating an easy, warm and welcoming autumn garden.

1. Autumn Heather

Heather is one of those plants that instantly makes pots feel ready for autumn. Its soft pinks, purples and whites bring colour when summer flowers begin to fade, and it looks beautiful mixed with trailing ivy or other seasonal foliage.

Perfect for pots, window boxes and doorstep displays, it's an easy way to give the garden a little autumn refresh without changing everything.

Gather & Bloom tip: Group two or three pots at different heights and mix heather with ivy for a fuller, more natural look. 🍂

2. Heuchera

Heuchera is perfect for bringing rich autumn colour into pots and borders. Its beautiful leaves come in shades of deep burgundy, caramel, bronze and lime, so it can add interest even when there aren't many flowers around.

It's especially lovely planted alongside heather and grasses, where the different colours and textures make a simple autumn display feel much more considered.

Gather & Bloom tip: Try a deep burgundy heuchera in a warm terracotta or aged stone pot — the colours look gorgeous together in autumn.

3. Ornamental Grasses

Ornamental grasses are perfect for adding softness, movement and texture to an autumn garden. Their feathery stems and warm golden tones look beautiful as the seasons change and can keep adding interest long after summer flowers have faded.

They work wonderfully in large pots, borders or alongside heather and heuchera, and they're an easy way to make a planting display feel fuller and more natural.

Gather & Bloom tip: Leave the dried stems in place through winter rather than cutting them straight back — they can look beautiful on frosty mornings and give the garden texture when there isn't much else growing.

4. Autumn Cyclamen

Cyclamen are perfect for bringing a little colour and softness to the garden as summer flowers start to disappear. Their delicate pink, white and deep red flowers look beautiful against their patterned green leaves and can brighten up pots, window boxes and doorstep displays through the cooler months.

They look especially lovely grouped with heather, heuchera and trailing ivy, creating an easy autumn arrangement with plenty of colour and texture.

Gather & Bloom tip: Plant cyclamen in a simple terracotta or aged stone pot and place near a doorway or seating area where you can really enjoy the flowers.

5. Skimmia

Skimmia is a lovely choice for keeping pots looking full and interesting as the weather gets cooler. Its glossy evergreen leaves provide year-round colour, while clusters of buds and berries add a beautiful seasonal touch through autumn and winter.

It looks gorgeous in a large terracotta or stone planter, either on its own or surrounded by smaller seasonal plants.

Gather & Bloom tip: Use skimmia as the taller centrepiece of an autumn pot, then add heuchera or trailing ivy around the edge for an easy layered display.
